Publications

The Society is publishing a series of books and pamphlets about Great Bowden's history and inhabitants.

Click here for full details about our first book "Great Bowden: A Village and its People", illustrated below, and for information how to order a copy.

IMPORTANT: Please note that the initial print run of 700 copies of this book sold out and it has therefore been reprinted, at considerable cost to the society. Regrettably we have had to increase the cover price to £9.50, and this is the current price - not £7.95 as stated in the above mentioned flyer.

Our first pamphlet "Geneological Information on the Headstones and Monuments at the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Great Bowden" was launched at the Society's AGM on 2 April 2001. The pamphlet covers 366 inscriptions - mostly 19th century - and around 150 different surnames. The earliest record is for Henrietta Fish, 1703. The last identifiable inscription relates to John Hales Neal, 1933.

Our second pamphlet, "Jobs in Great Bowden", was published in May 2002, just in time for the Jubilee celebrations. This is illustrated with several old photographs and contains some fascinating articles written by members of the Society, based either on research or their own recollections of jobs done by people in the village.

The third GBHS pamphlet "Great Bowden Cemetery: Genealogical Information from Market Harborough Council Register of Burials" contains details of neary 1500 burials that took place between January 1880 and December 1997.

The fourth GBHS pamphlet "Great Bowden: An Analysis of the 1851 Census" written by Sue Harris, one of our members, is a fascinating account of life in Great Bowden based on the information contained in the important 1851 census. There is information on how people lived, and what they did as their occupation, with detailed tables of facts and figures and a special item on farming in Great Bowden.

To obtain a copy of any of these pamphlets, which are all priced £3.00, please contact the Secretary, Nora Groome, or send an e-mail to paulharrison@greatbowden.freeserve.co.uk.
